Job Description

Organisation setting
The IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) was established in Malta in 1988 under an agreement concluded between the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Government of Malta. IMLI started its first programme in 1989. Its main purpose was, and remains, to train officers, principally from developing countries, in international maritime law. Over the last three decades, IMLI’s work has contributed to the establishment of a cadre of experts in international maritime law who are able to prepare, review and advise on the implementation of maritime laws and regulations.

The role
Under the overall supervision of the Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for organizing and managing all resources in the IMLI library, as well as for overseeing the daily operations of the library to ensure that academics, students, and visitors can access the resources they need for their studies or research.

Qualifications
A university degree in Library Science, Maritime Law, or another related field is required. A master’s degree in these fields would be considered an asset.

Work experience
Work experience in the field would be considered an asset.

Planning and organizing:
The selected candidate is expected to

  • Create, develop and manage collections of books, journals (both paper and electronic information resources) and websites as per the IMLI Guidelines for the Purchasing and Inventory of Library Holdings;
  • Select, acquire and catalogue information using library and information software;
  • Coordinate and deliver information and digital literacy sessions to students, researchers and staff;
  • Assist researchers with literature searches using databases, printed resources and the internet;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with academic staff and students, as well as external bodies such as suppliers;
  • Manage and support the provision of reading lists;
  • Take on responsibility, in some cases, for archives and other special collections;
  • Deal with user enquiries, which may involve one-on-one advice sessions;
  • Purchase resources subject to the approval of the Director;
  • Keep up to date with developments in the library sector, participate in professional groups or networks; and
  • Implement the IMLI Guidelines for the use of the Library.

Languages and computer skills
As the Institute’s working language is English, excellent oral and written communication skills in English are essential. Knowledge of one or more of the official languages of the United Nations will be an advantage. Good computer skills are essential.

Special notice
This position is open for an initial period of two years with a six-month probation period, with the possibility of renewal.
