Job Description

This vacancy has arisen within the Aerodrome Operations department on a full-time basis.

Purpose of Position
This is a managerial role directly accountable to the Head of Airport Operations and Business Continuity. The chosen candidate will be involved in Airfield operations and terminal interface, its associated safety management systems as well as being accountable for the safe and efficient operation of the Aerodrome Services Unit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the work of the Aerodrome Services teams and individuals to achieve work and aerodrome safeguarding objectives.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to Aerodrome Officers and Aerodrome Coordinator staff and other staff who undertake aerodrome-related works from time to time and provide assurance over health, safety and welfare of personnel.
  • Inspire and motivate employees to perform at the highest levels. Identify and resolve employee concerns and foster a culture of recognition and support.
  • Intervene through pre-emptive or (when necessary) reactive measures to assure business continuity of aviation activities on the arfield and the terminal interface.
  • Regularly review and assess Aerodrome staff competency requirements. Maintain and execute training plans.
  • Manage staff rostering, approval of leave, discipline and assure balanced distribution of daily work activities, including performance reviews and setting of targets.
  • Maintain staff well informed of Company activities and initiatives. Encourage aerodrome staff feedback and participation within cross Departmental activities.
  • To ensure that EASA / ICAO Aerodrome certification requirements are always met and that the aerodrome operates in accordance with Certification conditions and statutory requirements.
  • To identify hazards on the Aerodrome, evaluate risks and select and implement appropriate risk control measures, including the elimination of intolerable risks.
  • Plan, execute, monitor, assess the outcome of aerodrome operations and safety oversight activities.
  • Be aware of emergency procedures, direct aerodrome services staff during aerodrome emergencies, liaise emergency operations with management colleagues and higher management.
  • Liaise operational requirements with management colleagues and higher management within the Operation department and other Departments
  • Develop productive working relationships with airside stakeholders, particularly Malta Air Traffic Services, ground-handling service providers and MIA Met Office. Audit, monitor and report on ground-handler safety and procedural performance.
  • Exercise managerial control over and coordination of aerodrome works programs, involving the direction, control and oversight overwork programs in accordance with aerodrome safety assessments and plans.
  • Provide expert technical advice to the Aerodrome team and review and develop aerodrome work practices and procedures. Provide work briefings to staff and in-house training on existing and new procedures.
  • Record information about aerodrome status and condition. Prepare executive reports for higher management on aerodrome services activities for higher management.
  • Understand the impact of human factors when establishing safety systems and procedures.
  • Inspect and report on the state of aerodrome aprons, taxiways, runways and other related infrastructure, aerodrome and service road ground markings and signage.
  • Liaise maintenance requirements with technical departments or as otherwise necessary to redress operating deficiencies.
  • Oversee and maintain the FOD prevention program. Oversee routine programs for grass verge maintenance activities on the movement area.
  • Maintain vigilance over wildlife activity on the aerodrome. Assure that wildlife activity prevention procedures are executed and recorded.
  • Monitor the aerodrome internal and external environment for unadvised temporary obstacles or other safeguarding concerns.
  • Ensure that there is adequate provision for aerodrome drainage, particularly of the runway and strip. Execute pavement condition verification inspections and reporting during wet conditions when necessary.
  • Ensure that adequate systems, procedures and resources are in place for the planning, coordination, control and safety oversight of work in progress.
  • Ensure that aerodrome vehicles and aerodrome sweepers are maintained in optimum operating condition.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or 3+ years of related management experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly structured and organized.
  • Ability to assess, coach and develop employees.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with employees of all levels.
